- The USDA has approved the first vaccine for the H3N8 dog flu. Scientists believe that the virus jumped from horses to dogs over five years ago, but it has never crossed over to the human population. Breeds with a pushed-in nose such as a Pekingese, a pug or a Shi-Tzu, are particularly susceptible to the virus. More information can be found here.
- Stanley Coren, a dog expert and professor of Psychology at the University of British Columbia, has written a new book, The Intelligence of Dogs. He had over 200 professional dog obedience judges rank 110 dog breeds based on their intelligence. Number 1 most intelligent: Border Collie. Number 1 least intelligent: Afghan Hound. - In a new twist on “the dog ate my homework,” a Washington woman says she was forced to dip into her ex-husband’s bank account after her dog devoured all her personal checks. She is now under investigation for identity theft and forgery.
- A group of West Virginia activists protested against laws that allow for dog tethering by chaining themselves to a dog house and a tree in a local park. Although the local government is considering an ordinance to limit tethering time, this group wants a stricter law that bans any kind of tethering.
