- After an increase in complaints that pets are having adverse reactions to liquid flea and tick treatments, the E.P.A. is now warning pet owners that the treatments may have serious or even fatal side effects. According to the New York Times, “the agency now is evaluating all available data on the pesticides, including reports of adverse reactions, the clarity of directions and label warnings, and the pre-market safety data submitted in support of the products.” The E.P.A. is expected to issue its report by October.
- After banning pets from its jet cabins in 2006, Air Canada will again allow dogs and cats to travel on-board with their owners from July 1st. Close to bankruptcy, the financially stressed airline will charge $100 per pet on domestic flights and $200 on international flights. They will be treated as carry-on items that can be stowed under the seat.
- China is at a crossroads: According to the Wall Street Journal, “the central government is drafting the country’s first animal welfare law, which could ultimately impose criminal penalties for animal cruelty.” However, at the same time, the Shaanxi province has claimed the lives of 37,000 dogs in a program to halt the spread of rabies.

- Think your dog has an unusual name? MSNBC.com lists the top 10 wackiest dog names that include: Bam-Bam Noodle Butt, Velvet Elvis, and Doogie Schnauzer MD.
- PetAirways launches on July 14th. Not only is it for pets only, USATODAY.com thinks “the key to Pet Airways‘ success may be its choice of aircraft: the affordable, economical Beech 1900. Designed as a 19-passenger turboprop for use by regional carriers serving small markets, the 1900 used to be one of the most widely used planes by regional airlines. But travelers’ preference for jets forced airlines to abandon turboprops starting in the late 1990s, even though jets are more expensive to operate. That left the market flooded with little-used 1900s.” Consequently, they can be bought for $1.5 million vs. jets which cost between $10-$35 million each.
